Early Life and Family Background

Kulbhushan Jadhav was born on April 16, 1970, in Sangli, Maharashtra. His father, Sudhir Jadhav, is a retired officer of the Mumbai Police. In 1987, Kulbhushan enrolled in the National Defence Academy, and by 1991, he had joined the Indian Navy. He served as an engineer in the navy for 14 years.


Retired Indian Citizen

Kulbhushan Jadhav, also known as Hussain Mubarak Patel, is a former officer of the Indian Navy. He was arrested by the Pakistani military on March 3, 2016, in the Balochistan province. According to Pakistan, he is not only an Indian citizen but also an employee of the Indian intelligence agency, Research and Analysis Wing (RAW). However, India asserts that after retiring from the navy, Jadhav started a business in Iran.


Pakistan claims that Jadhav was arrested in Balochistan on March 29, 2016, while India contends that he was taken into custody from Iran. Pakistan alleges that he was involved in spreading terrorism in the Balochistan region and spying for India's intelligence agency.


Legal Proceedings at the ICJ

The Indian government filed a petition in the International Court of Justice (ICJ) to prevent Kulbhushan Jadhav's execution. On May 18, 2017, the ICJ issued a stay on the death penalty. However, a final decision is still pending. Additionally, the ICJ rejected India's plea for Jadhav's immediate release on July 17, 2019.
