Honoring National Sports Day


New Delhi: On National Sports Day, Sachin Tendulkar expressed admiration for India's advancements in various sports, while Abhinav Bindra honored those who support athletes behind the scenes.


Observed on August 29, National Sports Day commemorates Major Dhyan Chand, celebrated as the finest field hockey player ever, who led India to three Olympic gold medals in 1928, 1932, and 1936.


The national hockey stadium in New Delhi is named in his honor.


Tendulkar shared on 'X', "In this era dominated by smartphones, staying connected to my body through sports enhances my overall well-being, enabling me to contribute more to my family, friends, and philanthropic efforts."




He encouraged everyone to honor athletes, engage in sports, and embark on a journey toward healthier lifestyles.


Tendulkar emphasized that interest and talent in sports can be found in various fields, and all athletes deserve recognition for their dedication and hard work.


He noted the impressive achievements of Indian athletes across multiple sports, showcasing the country's diversity.




Bindra praised young talents like chess champion D Gukesh and World Cup winner Divya Deshmukh, attributing their success to the rise of sports leagues.


He highlighted the achievements of athletes such as Rachana, who won gold at the U17 World Championship, and Naisha Mehta, who made history in roller skating.


Tendulkar also acknowledged the contributions of Judo athlete Tulika Maan and the Women's Fours Lawn Bowls team, who won gold at the Commonwealth Games.


He pointed out that the emergence of various sports leagues, including the IPL, Indian Super League, and Pro Kabaddi League, has significantly boosted interest and talent development across the nation.


Tendulkar concluded by stressing the importance of fostering a culture of sports and fitness for the betterment of society.


Bindra, the gold medalist from the 2008 Beijing Olympics, expressed hope that the Olympic values would inspire all citizens.


He stated, "On National Sports Day, my thoughts are with every Indian athlete, known and unknown, and with all those who silently carry them forward, parents, coaches, teachers, physios, friends. Sport teaches us to strive, to respect, to stand together. May Olympic values guide not just our athletes but all of us as a nation."
