Celebrating Devotion: The Raas Festival in Biswanath
Raas Festival Kicks Off in Biswanath
Biswanath, Nov 4: The atmosphere in Biswanath was charged with spirituality as the three-day Raas festival began with vibrant celebrations on Monday.
Hosted by the North Chariali Sarbajanin Raasotsav Committee, this year's festivities are taking place at the Rail Gate Field, honoring the beloved cultural figure of Assam, Zubeen Garg.
On the inaugural day, thousands of devotees and fans of Garg gathered to engage in the devotional activities that marked the festival's commencement.
The event kicked off with Harinam Sankirtan, which included over a thousand verses, followed by the lighting of 5,000 lamps that brightened the entire venue.
Approximately two thousand participants joined in singing devotional hymns, enhancing the spiritual atmosphere of the evening.
“We had previously announced that Zubeen Garg would join us this year. Although he couldn't attend in person, we have dedicated the entire Raas festival to him,” stated Niranjan Hazarika, president of the Biswanath Raas Mahotsav.
It is worth noting that, similar to the last two years, Garg was expected to be part of the Biswanath Raas Mahotsav this year as well.
Even in his absence, his spirit was profoundly felt through the tributes, songs, and artistic displays that characterized the evening, transforming the event into a shared celebration of devotion and remembrance.
“We commenced the program with Diha Naam and the saaki lighting ceremony. Performances of songs like Mayabini were beautifully executed by artists such as Tonmoy Saikia, Dhrubajyoti Rajkhowa, Manash Bhagawati, and Bidyasagar. Additionally, Nilim Mahanta is creating live art as part of the festivities. The festival will run until November 5,” he added.
The highlight of the opening day was the debut of a special song composed in memory of Garg, penned and performed by his close friend Manas Bhagawati, which received heartfelt applause from the audience.
The festival will proceed over the next two days, featuring a variety of cultural and religious performances.
On November 4 and 5, attendees will enjoy plays depicting the childhood adventures of Lord Krishna, including the traditional Kalajaya Naat Kaligopal, a staple of the Biswanath Raas festival.
