A Special Celebration for a Historic Banyan Tree

On July 27, in Madurai, Tamil Nadu, environmental activists and local students came together to celebrate the birthday of a 107-year-old banyan tree, sending a powerful message about tree conservation. This event was part of the Green Nature Festival held in Madurai, organized by the Water Body Conservation Movement along with various welfare trusts.

The celebration took place in the Meenakshipuram area, located near the Sellur pond on the Sellur-Kulamangalam road, led by Abubakar, the founder of the Water Body Conservation Movement. According to the activists, this banyan tree is the only tree in the vicinity that has survived for over a century. Previously, at least seven other banyan trees had been cut down for road widening and park development.

To raise awareness against the potential cutting of this tree for future infrastructure projects, the activists have been celebrating its birthday annually since 2019. Local residents and students from Rajaji Middle School gathered to cut a cake, distribute sweets, and pledge to protect nature. The banyan tree was beautifully decorated for the occasion.

The organizers also provided notebooks and saplings to the participating students. During the event, activists highlighted that littering around the tree is causing harm, and the periodic trimming of branches by electricity board workers due to overhead power lines, along with noise pollution from firecrackers during local festivals, poses additional threats to the tree.

In a related incident, a nearly 200-year-old banyan tree in the Kulithalai area of Karur district fell, damaging two vehicles.
