CBSE Introduces Major Language Policy Changes for Class 9 and 10 Students
Significant Update in CBSE Language Policy
The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has announced a significant modification to its language policy for students in grades 9 and 10. According to a circular released on May 15, 2026, starting from July 1, 2026, all students in class 9 across CBSE-affiliated schools will be required to study three languages as part of their curriculum. However, it is important to note that there will be no board examination for the third language in class 10.
Implementation Timeline and Structure
Previously, reports indicated that the three-language system would commence from class 6 and extend through to class 10 by the academic year 2030-31. While the new circular issued on May 15, 2026, does not alter the foundational framework, it formalizes the timeline and implementation for grades 9 and 10, mandating the inclusion of three languages in the curriculum starting July 1, 2026.
Transition Approach for New Curriculum
As this change will take effect in the 2026-27 academic session, which begins in April, CBSE has decided to adopt a transitional approach to align its study plan with the NCERT curriculum during the implementation of the new structure. Under the revised system, students will study three languages designated as R1, R2, and R3. CBSE has clarified that at least two of these languages must be of Indian origin.
Options for Foreign Language Studies
Students may opt for a foreign language, but only if the other two languages are Indian languages. Foreign languages can also be taken as an additional fourth subject. The notification issued on May 15 states that starting July 1, 2026, the study of three languages (R1, R2, R3) will be mandatory for class IX, with at least two being Indian languages. Furthermore, students wishing to study a foreign language can do so as a third language only if the other two are Indian languages, or they may choose it as an additional fourth language.
