Cannes Film Festival 2025 Celebrates Satyajit Ray's Classic 'Aranyer Din Ratri'
Celebration of Cinema at Cannes 2025
The renowned Cannes Film Festival 2025 has commenced, showcasing a variety of films from across the globe. Among the highlights is the screening of Satyajit Ray's iconic 1970 film, 'Aranyer Din Ratri', which drew the attention of veteran actresses Sharmila Tagore and Simi Garewal.
Sharmila Tagore graced the event in a stunning green saree, accompanied by her daughter Saba Pataudi. Meanwhile, Simi Garewal turned heads in a chic white ensemble crafted by the Indian fashion label Karleo. Notably, acclaimed filmmaker Wes Anderson, a known admirer of Ray's work, was also present for the screening.
In attendance were producer Purnima Dutta, Margaret Bodde, the executive director of The Film Foundation, and Shivendra Singh Dungarpur, founder of the Film Heritage Foundation. The festival featured a 4K restored version of the Bengali film, showcased in the classic section, thanks to the collaborative efforts of The Film Foundation's World Cinema Project, L'Immagine Ritrovata, the Film Heritage Foundation, Janus Films, and the Criterion Collection.
'Aranyer Din Ratri', which translates to 'Days and Nights in the Forest', is adapted from the novel by Sunil Gangopadhyay. The film features a talented cast including Soumitra Chatterjee, Subhendu Chatterjee, Samit Bhanja, Rabi Ghosh, Pahari Sanyal, Kaberi Bose, and Aparna Sen.
The narrative follows four friends who embark on a journey to the Palmau forest, seeking an escape from their monotonous urban lives. Their adventure evolves into a profound journey of self-discovery.
