Exploring Cameron Green's Potential Roles

Andrew McDonald, the head coach of Australia, has revealed that all-rounder Cameron Green may be tested in various positions during the upcoming tours of Pakistan and Bangladesh. This comes as the team begins to strategize for the 2027 ODI World Cup following Glenn Maxwell's retirement from One Day Internationals.

Australia is set to compete in three ODIs in Pakistan, followed by another three in Bangladesh starting May 30. Green's position is anticipated to be a significant topic for selectors. Previously part of the 2023 ODI World Cup-winning team, Green has batted primarily at Nos. 3 and 4 in his last seven ODIs, but management is now contemplating a finishing role to fill Maxwell's absence.

Green's Capabilities as a Finisher

McDonald expressed confidence in Green's ability to bat both high and low in the order. He noted, "He possesses power, as demonstrated in last year's series against South Africa, where he effectively finished innings. With Maxwell's exit, we have discussed this possibility."

Green showcased his potential in white-ball cricket with a remarkable 47-ball century against South Africa in his last ODI appearance in August. However, his performance has faced scrutiny following a challenging Ashes series and T20 World Cup.

Confidence in Green's All-Round Skills

Despite recent challenges, McDonald emphasized the team's faith in Green's all-around contributions. "We keep our options open. While 'experiment' may not be the right term, we are exploring different strategies as we approach the 2027 World Cup. His diverse skill set provides us with various options, particularly with his bowling," McDonald stated.

The coach also pointed out Green's improvement with the ball after recovering from a back injury that sidelined him during the 2025 Champions Trophy.

Bowling Skills and Recent Performance

McDonald remarked, "I believe he has a significant role to play with the ball. His bowling is progressing well. The more he bowls, especially in IPLs, the more he improves. The signs are promising, especially considering his recent surgery and the skills he's regaining in white-ball formats."

Green's recent IPL season with Kolkata Knight Riders was inconsistent, where he scored 322 runs in 14 matches at an average of 32.20 and took seven wickets. He faced early criticism as Kolkata struggled but managed to recover, narrowly missing the playoffs.

Support Amidst Inconsistency

Despite his recent difficulties, McDonald remains optimistic about Green's ability to regain form across all formats. "He faced a tough summer and didn't meet his performance expectations. However, we recognize the full value he brings to the team. We want him to improve his batting average, and he shares that goal. His fielding and bowling are also crucial parts of his game, and we believe he will bounce back," McDonald added.

"We continuously discuss how to enhance our coaching methods to support Cam on his journey. It's not solely about the player; it's about how we can assist him in preparing and maximizing his potential. He is not where he wants to be, and we are committed to helping him reach his goals," he concluded.

Schedule for Upcoming Matches

Australia's first ODI against Pakistan is scheduled for Saturday in Rawalpindi, followed by two more ODIs in Lahore. In Bangladesh, all three ODIs will take place at Dhaka's Shere Bangla National Stadium, with the T20I series set to occur in Chattogram.
