Chirang, April 18: Following a violent incident during an eviction operation at the Runikhata Forest Range in Assam's Chirang district, officials and political figures have urged for peace and a thorough investigation. Security forces are currently on high alert in the region.
Kunjan Basumatary, the Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) for Chirang, expressed strong disapproval of the destruction caused during the unrest, emphasizing that the loss of forests and natural resources is a grave concern.
“While the burning of the office is regrettable, the greater issue is the devastation of our forests and natural resources. What advantage do we gain from harming nature? Shouldn't we safeguard government properties and lands?” Basumatary remarked.
He pointed out that significant encroachment and damage to forest land had already occurred in the area.
“Acres of forest land have been encroached upon, and many trees have been felled. Although four vehicles were set ablaze and three rifles were damaged yesterday, the burning of forests must cease. We need to protect our forests and halt encroachment,” he stated.
Subhash Tirkey, Chairman of the Adivasi Development Board, described the violence as “unfortunate,” suggesting that dialogue could have resolved the issue instead of confrontation.
“The events in Chirang at the Runikhata Forest Range are regrettable. This situation could have been addressed through discussions, as misunderstandings exist,” Tirkey commented.
He encouraged the community to trust the legal system and pursue peaceful resolutions.
“This incident is condemnable and should not have occurred. It is essential for people to have faith in the law, and we advocate for a resolution through peaceful and lawful means,” he added.
Tirkey also called for an impartial investigation into claims that some innocent individuals may have been detained during the crackdown.
“According to our information, a few innocent people have been apprehended and mistreated. We demand a thorough investigation, as innocent individuals should never face punishment,” he stated.
Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) Chief Hagrama Mohilary visited the affected area on Saturday with his team and announced that the council would request a comprehensive report from the Forest Department to be submitted to the Assam government for further legal action.
He confirmed that an inquiry into the incident would be conducted, emphasizing that the Forest Department, which was directly involved in the eviction, must provide an accurate report.
In the aftermath of the violence, mobile internet and data services have been suspended in Chirang and the adjacent Kokrajhar districts. Security measures have been heightened, with the Rapid Action Force (RAF), CRPF, and police conducting continuous patrols to avert any further disturbances.
