Calcutta High Court Reviews Progress in Law Student Rape Case Investigation

The Calcutta High Court has received a progress report from the Kolkata Police regarding the investigation into the rape of a law student. The court has instructed the police to provide further updates while ensuring the confidentiality of the report. The victim's counsel expressed satisfaction with the investigation's progress but requested access to the report. The incident, which occurred on June 25, has raised significant legal and ethical concerns, prompting discussions about human rights violations in the treatment of suspects. The court's directives aim to maintain transparency while protecting sensitive information.
 

Investigation Update Presented to the Court


In Kolkata, the Special Investigation Team (SIT) from the Kolkata Police, which has been looking into the rape case involving a law student from Kasba, submitted an update on their findings to a Division Bench of the Calcutta High Court on Thursday.


The report was presented in a sealed envelope to Justices Soumen Sen and Smita Das.


Currently, the Detective Department of Kolkata Police is handling the investigation.


The victim's legal representative, present in court, expressed satisfaction with the investigation's progress but requested access to the report to better understand the developments.


After reviewing the report, the court instructed the police to provide another update in a month.


Additionally, the court ordered that a copy of the investigation report be shared with the victim's counsel.


The court emphasized the importance of maintaining confidentiality regarding the progress report to prevent any leaks to the media or other entities.


On the same day, officials from South Calcutta Law College, where the incident occurred on June 25, submitted an affidavit acknowledging that their directive for students to leave the campus by 4 PM was disregarded.


The alleged assault took place between 7:30 PM and 9:30 PM on June 25, with the victim reporting the incident to the nearby Kasba Police Station that night.


The attorney for one of the three primary suspects claimed that his client's treatment during the trial was a violation of human rights.


The court advised him to raise this issue with the State Legal Aid Services.
