Kolkata: On Thursday, a single-judge bench of the Calcutta High Court granted conditional approval for a political event organized by former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in Sreerampore, located in the Hooghly district, scheduled for Friday.

The Trinamool Congress, led by Banerjee, has arranged for her to be the main speaker at this event, which includes a public meeting followed by a rally.

Initially, the police had denied permission for the gathering, prompting the Trinamool Congress to seek legal approval from the Calcutta High Court.

During the hearing, Justice Saugata Bhattacharya of the Calcutta High Court provided conditional consent for the public meeting but denied permission for the rally, citing concerns over potential traffic congestion on the busy Grand Trunk Road.

The court has set specific conditions for the public meeting, allowing it to take place from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. and limiting attendance to a maximum of 2,000 individuals.

Justice Bhattacharya emphasized that no inflammatory remarks that could offend religious sentiments should be made during the meeting.

He also instructed the state administration to ensure adequate police presence to maintain order during the event.

Furthermore, a list of volunteers, including their contact numbers, must be submitted to the police by 8 p.m. on Thursday.

This event marks Mamata Banerjee's first outdoor political engagement in the district since the Assembly elections, which resulted in a significant loss for the Trinamool Congress.
