Calcutta High Court Dismisses TMC's Data Protection Plea Amid ED Raids

In a significant ruling, the Calcutta High Court has dismissed the Trinamool Congress's plea for the protection of its data, following the Enforcement Directorate's confirmation that no items were seized during recent raids. The court's decision came after the ED clarified its position regarding the January 8 operations at the office and residence of I-PAC director Pratik Jain. Justice Suvra Ghosh noted that there was no further matter to address, leading to the dismissal of the petition. The court also postponed a related ED request for a CBI investigation into the events surrounding the raids. This ruling has implications for the ongoing political landscape in West Bengal.

Court Ruling on TMC's Data Protection Request

Kolkata: On Wednesday, the Calcutta High Court dismissed the Trinamool Congress (TMC)'s request for safeguarding its data, following the Enforcement Directorate's (ED) statement that no items were confiscated from the office and residence of I-PAC director Pratik Jain during last week's raids.

The TMC had approached the court to ensure the preservation of personal and political data that might have been taken by the ED during their operations on January 8.

During the proceedings, additional solicitor general SV Raju, representing the ED, confirmed to the court that nothing had been seized from the specified locations.

Justice Suvra Ghosh, while dismissing the TMC's plea, noted that based on the ED's and the Union of India's submissions, there was no further matter to address regarding the ruling party's petition.

Additionally, Justice Ghosh postponed a separate petition from the ED requesting a CBI investigation into the events of January 8, when Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee visited the political consultancy's office in Salt Lake and Jain's residence in south Kolkata during the raids.

The high court decided to adjourn the ED's petition since the agency has already filed a special leave petition with the Supreme Court, which contains similar requests to those presented in the current application.
