Cachar Police Promotes Road Safety with Unique Initiative
Innovative Approach to Road Safety in Silchar
Silchar, Jan 18: A thoughtful act at a bustling intersection in Silchar has sparked reflection among commuters as the Cachar Police opted for appreciation and guidance rather than fines to emphasize road safety during the ongoing National Road Safety Month.
On Friday at Sadarghat, the Traffic Branch of Cachar Police organized a special checkpoint where drivers adhering to traffic regulations were welcomed with roses, while motorcyclists caught without helmets were given helmets instead of facing penalties.
This initiative encouraged many road users to stop, recognize their mistakes, and pledge to adopt safer practices.
Numerous commuters expressed surprise and acceptance of the initiative, with many promptly donning the helmets they received.
Police personnel were also seen leading a road safety pledge for some riders without helmets, emphasizing that following traffic laws is about safeguarding lives rather than fearing punishment.
Cachar Senior Superintendent of Police Partha Protim Das shared with the media that the campaign aims to foster awareness that cultivates personal accountability.
“January is designated as Road Safety Month, focusing on shifting mindsets. When individuals understand that adhering to rules like wearing helmets and seatbelts can protect their lives and those of others, genuine change occurs. Enforcement alone is insufficient,” he stated.
The SSP further noted that similar awareness campaigns will be rolled out across the district through various police stations in the upcoming days to reduce accident-related deaths.
This initiative, backed by officials from the District Transport Department and the Silchar Excise Department, garnered attention from both residents and commuters, many of whom regarded the gesture as a timely reminder of the importance of responsible driving.
