Cabinet Approves Major Railway Projects Worth ₹23,437 Crore to Enhance Connectivity
Significant Railway Projects Approved
The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has given the green light to three railway projects with a total investment of approximately ₹23,437 crore. These initiatives include the construction of the third and fourth railway lines on the Nagdamathura, Guntakalwadi, and Burhwal-Sitapur sections. According to an official press release, the enhanced capacity of these railway lines is expected to significantly improve transportation, thereby increasing the operational efficiency and reliability of Indian Railways. These multi-line projects will facilitate smoother operations and reduce congestion.
Rail Sections Addressing Congestion
Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw stated that these railway sections are part of congested routes, and the new lines will enhance connectivity between major cities and towns. The government noted that these projects are designed under the 'Prime Minister Gati Shakti National Master Plan' to improve multi-level connectivity and logistics efficiency, ensuring seamless movement of people, goods, and services. Covering 19 districts across Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, and Telangana, these projects will add approximately 901 kilometers to the Indian railway network, benefiting around 83 lakh people in nearly 4,161 villages.
Boosting Connectivity to Major Tourist Destinations
These projects will also enhance connectivity to significant tourist attractions such as the Mahakaleshwar Temple, Ranthambore National Park, Kuno National Park, Keoladeo National Park, Mathura, Vrindavan, and Naimisharanya. From a freight perspective, these railway routes are crucial for transporting products like coal, food grains, cement, petroleum products, steel, iron ore, containers, and fertilizers. With the increased capacity, there is potential for an additional 6 crore tons of freight transport annually. The Railway Minister highlighted the environmental benefits of these projects, noting a reduction of approximately 37 crore liters in oil imports and a decrease of 185 crore kilograms in carbon emissions, equivalent to planting around 7 crore trees.
