C. Joseph Vijay Secures Support for Government Formation in Tamil Nadu
Vijay's Coalition Gains Momentum
Actor-turned-politician C. Joseph Vijay has successfully garnered the necessary support to form a government in Tamil Nadu. Reports indicate that the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) has extended unconditional backing to the Tamilga Vetrik Kazhagam (TVK). The VCK has officially submitted a letter of support to the TVK, boosting the coalition's strength to 118 seats, which aligns perfectly with the majority requirement, paving the way for the establishment of the state's first coalition government.
Coalition Leaders Express Gratitude
TVK leader Adhav Arjun expressed gratitude towards coalition partners while rallying support for Vijay, showcasing the letter of support from the VCK. He thanked the Congress, leftist parties, and VCK chief Thirumavalavan for their assistance, confidently stating that Vijay is set to become the Chief Minister. Previously, VCK leader Thol Thirumavalavan was expected to announce support, albeit with certain conditions, the most significant being the continuation of welfare schemes initiated by the DMK government. Among these conditions, the VCK prioritized the continuation of two commissions: one established to recommend laws against honor killings and another to consider reservations in promotions for government jobs.
TVK's Election Victory and Coalition Efforts
Following their historic victory in the assembly elections held on April 23, the TVK has intensified efforts to secure support for government formation. The party has reached out to allies of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), including the Congress, Communist Party of India (CPI), and the Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPI-M). The TVK achieved a remarkable win in 108 seats during the elections, although it fell short of the majority by 10 seats. In the 234-member Tamil Nadu assembly, the Congress holds five seats, while the other three parties each have two representatives.
