Alwar, May 23: Approximately 40 individuals sustained injuries when a sleeper bus overturned on the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway in Rajasthan's Alwar district on Saturday. The bus was en route from Sheopur in Madhya Pradesh to Govardhan in Uttar Pradesh, as reported by officials.
The incident occurred within the jurisdiction of the Reni Police Station, creating a scene of panic as passengers cried out for assistance after the bus toppled into a deep ditch beside the road.
Officials indicated that the accident happened around 7 a.m. near Chainage 139.6 on the expressway, when the bus, allegedly traveling in the wrong lane, lost control and flipped over.
All nearly 40 passengers aboard the bus suffered injuries of varying degrees due to the accident.
According to police, many passengers were on their way to partake in religious events associated with the ongoing Braj Chaurasi Parikrama pilgrimage during Adhik Maas.
The passengers hailed from various regions, heading to Govardhan in Mathura for religious gatherings and Bhagwat Katha sessions.
Initial police investigations suggest that the driver may have dozed off briefly, leading to the bus losing control and overturning on the expressway.
Upon receiving reports of the accident, Rajasthan Police teams promptly arrived at the scene to conduct rescue and relief efforts, overseen by Reni Police Station SHO Banesingh Meena.
With assistance from National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) ambulances, all injured individuals were transported to Pinan Hospital for medical attention.
Medical professionals treating the injured reported that at least six individuals suffered critical injuries and were subsequently referred to Alwar for more advanced care.
Officials noted that the number of critically injured patients sent to Alwar might increase based on further medical evaluations.
Investigations into the precise details surrounding the accident are ongoing, although initial findings point to the driver falling asleep as the main cause of the incident.
One passenger, Lalita Goyal from Gangapur City, shared that she had first traveled to Sawai Madhopur before boarding the bus to continue her journey to Govardhan.
She mentioned that the group was traveling to Govardhan Ji to attend a Bhagwat Katha event.
Following the accident, an NHAI team also arrived to aid in rescue and clearance operations. Once all passengers were safely transported to hospitals, the overturned bus was lifted from the ditch and set upright using a JCB machine.
