BSF Refutes Claims of Suspects Crossing into Meghalaya from Bangladesh
BSF Denies Reports of Suspects Entering Meghalaya
Shillong, Dec 28: The Border Security Force (BSF) in Meghalaya has rejected assertions made by the Bangladesh Police regarding the entry of key suspects linked to Inquilab Moncho leader, Sharif Osman Hadi, into the state.
Inspector General O P Upadhyay of the BSF stated, "There is no evidence indicating that anyone has crossed the international boundary from the Haluaghat sector into Meghalaya. The BSF has not detected or received any reports of such an occurrence."
He further emphasized that the circulating claims are baseless and misleading.
BSF officials clarified that personnel stationed along the international border are on high alert to prevent any incidents, especially given the current unrest in the neighboring country.
The force assured that any attempts at illegal cross-border movement would be swiftly identified and addressed.
A senior officer from the Meghalaya police also mentioned that there is "no input or intelligence to support" the claims regarding the suspects' presence in the Garo Hills area.
The officer added that local police units have not observed any such movements and that coordination with central agencies is ongoing.
Earlier, a senior officer from Dhaka Metropolitan Police claimed that two main suspects in the Hadi murder case have entered Meghalaya through the Haluaghat border "with assistance from local associates."
Sharif Osman Hadi, aged 32, was shot in the head on December 12 during an election campaign in Dhaka. He was subsequently airlifted to Singapore for advanced medical care but succumbed to his injuries on December 18.
Hadi, who served as the spokesperson for Inquilab Moncho, was a notable youth leader during the mass protests in July-August 2024 that resulted in the downfall of the Sheikh Hasina-led Awami League government last year.
He was also a candidate for the upcoming parliamentary elections scheduled for February 12.
The Garo Hills region is part of Meghalaya's western sector, which shares an international border with Bangladesh and is monitored by the Border Security Force.
