Springsteen's Protest Performance

During the 'No Kings' rally held in St. Paul, Bruce Springsteen delivered a stirring rendition of his protest anthem "Streets of Minneapolis" to a large audience gathered outside the Minnesota State Capitol. Prior to his performance, he voiced strong criticism regarding the federal forces' presence in Minneapolis earlier this year. "This past winter, federal troops brought death and terror to the streets of Minneapolis, but they picked the wrong city," he declared. He emphasized the resilience and unity of the people in Minneapolis and Minnesota, stating, "Your strength and your commitment told us that this is still America, and this reactionary nightmare — and these invasions of American cities — will not stand. You gave us hope, you gave us courage." Springsteen also honored those who lost their lives, mentioning Renee Good, a mother of three, and Alex Pretti, a VA nurse, both victims of violence. He vowed that their bravery and sacrifices would not be forgotten.

Following his speech, Springsteen performed "Streets of Minneapolis," a song inspired by recent events. In a previous conversation with a local media outlet, he described the 'No Kings' movement as pivotal. He remarked, "When you have the opportunity to sing something where the timing is essential and if you have something powerful to sing, it elevates the moment, it elevates your job to another level." The song made its live debut on January 30 at a benefit concert in Minneapolis, which Springsteen later reflected on as one of the most significant performances of his career.

Springsteen concluded by reflecting on the significance of being in the right place at the right time, stating, "There are certain moments where you’re in the right place at the right time and something deeply meaningful occurs that is bigger than the band. It all has to do with the events of the day, the moment you’re in." He has since performed the song at various events, including a recent appearance at the 30th anniversary of the program Democracy Now! in New York, prior to the rally in St. Paul.
