Brijmohan Agrawal: A Political Icon of Raipur
A Legacy in Raipur
In Raipur, time is of the essence, yet one feels compelled to meet a certain individual. The first name that springs to mind is Brijmohan Agrawal. Since I began observing politics, he has been the most recognized figure in Raipur. Even after his transition from state politics to Delhi, Raipur remains close to his heart. The connection between Raipur and Brijmohan has become synonymous over the years. His journey from Ram Sagar Para to student politics and later to state politics is fascinating. Known for his unyielding political presence and exceptional public relations, he has garnered a vast following across Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh, including artists, journalists, and writers. To the common people, he is affectionately known as 'Mohan Bhaiya.' Achieving such enduring popularity in a region historically dominated by the Shukla brothers and Congress is no small feat.
Champion of Electoral Battles
Whether contesting elections or managing them, Brijmohan Agrawal serves as the BJP's mascot. His mere presence in the electoral arena often secures half the victory even before voting begins. He is a leader among workers, deeply rooted in the hearts of the people, and a man of trust. Consequently, he has frequently been appointed as the election manager in by-elections since the formation of Chhattisgarh. For him, every election is a chance to win. He is a tireless politician, known for his relentless campaigning. His charisma from the days of united Madhya Pradesh still resonates today, as he remains surrounded by admirers in Bhopal. Even after 25 years since Chhattisgarh's establishment, he has not forgotten his old capital, and he ensures that others remember it too. His calls and messages during festivals or on birthdays keep him connected with the people.
A Politician Beyond Power
Many politicians fade into obscurity after achieving modest success, but Brijmohan stands as a testament to continuity, tradition, and public sentiment. Even his opponents cannot overlook him. His steadfastness in beliefs, coupled with a refusal to view adversaries as enemies, elevates his stature. He has held various positions but has never allowed power to define him. Meeting people with genuine warmth creates a sense of camaraderie, making interactions feel like reunions with friends. Despite his busy schedule, he thrives on connecting with others, drawing strength from the love of the public, which motivates him to work tirelessly. His unwavering support for his family, especially his wife, could fill a book. While the party has given him much, he has reciprocated with hard work beyond his capacity, remaining steadfast even in challenging times.
Building Connections Through Dialogue
Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh are not just my professional grounds but also where I began my journalistic journey. I have known Brijmohan since 1994, having first met him at his office near his ancestral home in Ram Sagar Para. A mutual friend introduced us, and I had heard much about his amiable nature. His ability to connect with people through dialogue and kindness has made him a significant figure. Brijmohan embodies public engagement; his interactions with people are his hallmark. While many possess power and influence, his character sets him apart. Even in tough situations, he remains resilient, supported by the public's affection. This makes being Brijmohan a unique experience, characterized by constant interaction and dedication.
A Friend to All
During my time at a local newspaper in Bilaspur, Brijmohan was out of the party for six years. Despite this, he continued to voice opposition against the Ajit Jogi government while remaining active in party work. Whenever he visited Bilaspur, I would receive a call from him, often asking, 'Where are you, Sanjay? I'm coming to Bilaspur. Shall we go to Ratanpur?' His warmth is rare. It was through him that I connected with Shri Mulchand Agrawal, a former MLA and minister in Madhya Pradesh. Brijmohan often visited Mulchand's residence, where we would meet. Though Mulchand is no longer with us, his memories linger on.
Enduring Relevance in Changing Politics
Brijmohan has cultivated a vast network in Bilaspur, embodying the essence of friendship. He values relationships above all else, and it is the public's blessings that keep him relevant in today's rapidly changing political landscape. In an era where caste-based politics has taken root, his resilience signifies a triumph of public trust. Although he deserved significant positions, the social dynamics of the state did not align with him. His extensive parliamentary experience speaks volumes about his utility to society. His political journey from a student leader to a minister and MP in two states is remarkable. Continuous victories have bolstered his confidence, and the public's unwavering support has empowered him. His presence reassures us that humanity still exists in politics, where empathy and sensitivity remain essential traits. Success comes through dialogue, not closed doors. Brijmohan has achieved everything a politician aspires to, but the friendships and public affection he has garnered are truly exceptional. Many, including myself, wish to see him thriving and strong, as such political stalwarts are rare. Their creation requires a vision, an organization, and dedicated individuals committed to a purpose. It is heartening to see that the ideals he embraced in his student days continue to guide him.
