A Historic Achievement for Women in the Armed Forces

New Delhi: In a groundbreaking achievement for the Indian Air Force, Air Vice Marshal Shakti Sharma has made history by becoming the first female officer (non-medical) in the nation's armed forces to reach the rank of air vice marshal or its equivalent, as confirmed by officials on Tuesday.

She took on the role of assistant chief of the air staff (education) at the Air Headquarters starting September 1.

Previously, she held the rank of air commodore, according to an IAF representative.

The defence ministry highlighted, "In a historic milestone for the Indian Air Force, Air Vice Marshal Shakti Sharma became the first woman officer (non-medical) in the Indian Defence Forces to attain the rank of Air Vice Marshal (or equivalent)."

Commissioned into the Education Branch of the IAF on June 18, 1994, AVM Sharma brings extensive experience from various positions across training establishments, field stations, command headquarters, and the Air Headquarters.

Throughout her career, she has led significant institutional initiatives, such as establishing the IAF Chairs of Excellence at IIT Kanpur and Pune University to enhance academic and strategic defence partnerships. Notably, she was the first woman officer from the Tri-Services to command a Sainik School, serving as the principal of Sainik School, Kapurthala.

This remarkable accomplishment signifies a new era for women officers within the Indian defence forces. With over thirty years of exemplary service, she continues to motivate future generations to 'Touch the Sky with Glory'—the IAF's motto.
