Brazil Triumphs Over Japan to Advance in FIFA World Cup 2026
Lula Celebrates Brazil's Victory
On Tuesday, Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva extended his congratulations to the national football team after their 2-1 victory against Japan, which secured their spot in the Round of 16 at the FIFA World Cup 2026.
In a message shared on X, Lula praised the team's spirit, expressing that the entire nation is united in support of the Selecão following this win. He stated, "Let's go all out, Brazil!!! So much excitement. Congrats to the team for their grit and victory. All of Brazil is cheering. Onward to the round of 16!"
Thrilling Comeback Secures Win
Gabriel Martinelli delivered a stunning 95th-minute goal, leading Brazil to a thrilling comeback victory over Japan, clinching a place in the Round of 16 during a packed stadium match on Monday (local time).
Japan shocked the five-time champions in the first half when Kaishu Sano intercepted a loose ball and executed a remarkable 40-yard solo run, firing a powerful shot past Alisson to score the opening goal.
After a challenging first half where Brazil struggled against Japan's Zion Suzuki, the team ramped up their efforts. Gabriel Magalhaes sent a precise cross to veteran midfielder Casemiro, who headed the ball into the net, equalizing the score at 1-1.
As the match seemed headed for extra time, Danilo regained possession and passed to Endrick, who set up Bruno Guimaraes. Guimaraes then delivered a perfect pass to an unmarked Martinelli, who calmly slotted the ball into the far corner, securing the 2-1 win.
Next Challenge Awaits
With this victory, Brazil moves on to the Round of 16, where they will face either Ivory Coast or Norway on July 5 at the New York New Jersey Stadium.
A Unique World Cup Matchup
This Round of 32 match in the expanded 2026 format was a memorable encounter, as Brazil and Japan rarely meet on football's biggest stage.
Prior to this match, the two teams had only clashed once in World Cup history, during the 2006 tournament in Germany. In that game, Japan took an early lead, but Brazil came back to win 4-1 with goals from Ronaldo and others.
Historically, Brazil has dominated this matchup, winning 12 out of 15 encounters, with 2 draws and only one loss. However, Japan did achieve a surprising 3-2 victory in a friendly match in Tokyo just months before this tournament.
