BPF Leader Confirms Congress Outreach Ahead of Assam Poll Results

In a recent press conference, Hagrama Mohilary, the chief of the Bodoland People’s Front, confirmed that the Congress party had attempted to reach out to his party ahead of the Assam election results. While he noted that there were no direct discussions with him, he emphasized the BPF's commitment to development and strengthening the Bodoland Territorial Council rather than negotiating for ministerial roles. Mohilary also questioned the authority of Congress leaders in making offers regarding the Chief Minister position. His recent meeting with Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma was purely ceremonial, aimed at congratulating him on the NDA's electoral victory.

Guwahati, May 6: Hagrama Mohilary, the leader of the Bodoland People’s Front (BPF), confirmed on Wednesday that the Congress party had made attempts to connect with his regional party prior to the announcement of the Assam election results. This statement supports the claims made by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma the previous day.

During a press interaction, Mohilary noted that while there were no "direct discussions" with him, the Congress had reached out to some members of the BPF.

“Although Congress leaders did not engage with me directly, they did approach certain members of our party,” Mohilary stated.

On Tuesday, Chief Minister Sarma had asserted that the Congress was trying to make contact with the BPF to enhance its electoral chances.

Mohilary also questioned the authority of Gaurav Gogoi in making such offers, stating, “Does Gaurav Gogoi have the power or capacity to offer me the post of Chief Minister?”

He emphasized that the BPF's focus is on development and reinforcing the Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC), rather than negotiating for ministerial roles.

“As part of the NDA, the BPF contested in 11 constituencies, winning 10 seats while the BJP secured four. We only lost one seat. Our aim is to work for all communities and promote development across all sectors of society. Strengthening the BTC is our main goal,” he asserted.

Addressing rumors regarding potential negotiations for cabinet positions in the new government, Mohilary stated that ministerial representation was never a priority for the party.

“The number of ministers the BPF receives is not a matter for negotiation. Our focus is on development and collaboration within the NDA framework,” he added.

Mohilary clarified that his recent meeting with Sarma was merely a ceremonial visit to congratulate him on the NDA's electoral success and did not involve any political discussions.

“We met with the Chief Minister solely to congratulate him after the victory. There were no political talks during our meeting,” he concluded.
