BMC Election Results: BJP Alliance Poised for Victory in Mumbai
Counting Underway for BMC Elections
The counting of votes for the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections is currently taking place at all 23 designated centers, with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led Mahayuti coalition showing strong prospects for a significant win in Mumbai. The final results are expected to be announced by this evening. According to officials, the counting process is being conducted in strict adherence to the guidelines set by the Election Commission of India (ECI), with extensive arrangements made for security, traffic management, and maintaining law and order.
BJP and Shiv Sena Coalition Surpasses Majority
Based on the trends, the BJP and Shiv Sena coalition has crossed the majority mark. Currently, the BJP holds a lead in 89 seats, while Shiv Sena has secured 29, bringing their combined total to 118. To achieve a majority in the BMC elections, a minimum of 114 seats out of 227 wards is required. The detailed plan for the counting process has been approved by the Municipal Commissioner. The BMC elections were held on Thursday (January 15) for the election of councilors across 227 wards, making it the largest and wealthiest municipal corporation in India.
Voter Participation and Candidate Statistics
A significant number of candidates participated in the elections, with approximately 1,700 individuals contesting, including 879 women and 821 men. This marks a 25.27% decrease in representation compared to the 2,275 candidates who participated in the municipal elections of February 2017. The BJP contested in 136 wards of the BMC, while the Shiv Sena (Shinde faction) fielded candidates in 89 wards. The coalition did not field candidates in wards 145, 167, 211, and 212, while friendly contests were observed in wards 34, 173, and 225.
