BJP Secures Unprecedented Victory in West Bengal

Kolkata: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has achieved a remarkable victory in West Bengal, marking its first time in power since the country gained independence. This success was driven by an eight percent increase in voter support, allowing the party to secure 206 seats, a significant rise from the 77 seats it held in 2021.

According to data from the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of West Bengal, the BJP's vote share surged from 38 percent in 2021 to 46 percent in 2026, contributing to this impressive gain.

When comparing the current results to the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, the BJP's performance remains strong, with a notable increase in both seats and vote percentage. In the 2024 elections, the party had a presence in only 90 Assembly constituencies with a 39 percent vote share. The recent elections saw a seven percent positive swing, boosting their seat count by 116.

The combined vote share of the CPI(M)-led Left Front and Congress, both contesting separately, stands at approximately eight percent, with the Left Front receiving around five percent and Congress three percent. Congress has successfully elected two representatives, while the Left Front has secured one seat.

In previous elections, both parties had a seat-sharing agreement, but neither managed to win any seats in the 2021 Assembly elections. Their combined vote share in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections was also around eight percent.

Additionally, Nawsad Siddique from the All India Secular Front (AISF) retained his seat in the Bhangar Assembly constituency, while former Trinamool Congress member Humayun Kabir, who established the Aam Janata Unnayan Party (AJUP), won in both Naoda and Rejinagar constituencies in the minority-heavy Murshidabad district.
