BJP Announces New Candidates for Upcoming Elections
On Tuesday, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) released its fourth list of candidates for the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections, featuring the name of Soma Thakur, wife of Union Minister Shantanu Thakur, who will contest from the Bagda seat in North 24 Parganas. With this announcement, the BJP has now declared a total of 287 candidates for the elections, which will take place in two phases.
Additionally, the party has made a change in its candidate for the Manikgudi constituency, replacing Kaushik Roy with Dalim Roy. Other candidates include Shyamalal Hati from Howrah South, Girija Shankar Roy from Natabari, and Ashutosh Burman from Sitai. Uttam Kumar Banik will contest from Magrahat Purba, Debangshu Panda from Falta, Debashish Dhar from Sonarpur North, and Ranjan Kumar Paul from Panchla. Furthermore, Santosh Pathak, who recently switched from Congress to BJP, has been nominated for the Chaurangi Assembly seat in Kolkata.

West Bengal Elections 2026 Schedule
Voting in West Bengal will occur in two phases on April 23 and April 29, with results set to be announced on May 4. The state assembly, which consists of 294 seats, will witness a fierce contest between the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC), led by Mamata Banerjee, and the BJP. The first phase will cover polling in Purulia, Bankura, Jhargram, Birbhum, East and West Midnapore, Jalpaiguri, Malda, Murshidabad, North and South Dinajpur, West Bardhaman, Darjeeling, Cooch Behar, Alipurduar, and Kalimpong. The second phase will include East Bardhaman, Nadia, North and South 24 Parganas, Howrah, Hooghly, and Kolkata.
