BJP Unveils First List of Candidates for Upcoming BMC Elections
BJP Announces Candidates for BMC Elections
On Monday, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) released its initial list of 66 candidates for the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections, scheduled for January next year. The party, buoyed by its recent successes in municipal council and panchayat elections in the state, aims to replicate this performance in the upcoming municipal elections. The BJP is contesting the BMC elections in alliance with the Shiv Sena, led by Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde. However, the two parties have yet to disclose the seat-sharing arrangement. The BJP plans to contest 140 out of the 227 seats in the BMC, while Shinde's faction will compete for the remaining 87 seats.
Support from Maharashtra's Chief Minister
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has consistently backed the Shiv Sena and instructed BJP leaders to refrain from attacking Shinde's party. Last week, he stated, "The BJP and Shiv Sena are united. Everything is proceeding smoothly. There is no need for a formal announcement of our alliance." Paying tribute to former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, he expressed confidence that the Mahayuti coalition would win the upcoming BMC elections. He emphasized the coalition's commitment to forming a government in the BMC, stating, "The darkness will fade, the sun will rise, and the lotus will bloom." This election aims to establish transparent and honest governance in the municipal body.
Election Schedule
Elections for 29 municipal corporations across Maharashtra, including Mumbai, are set for January 15, with results to be announced the following day.
