BJP Unveils First Candidate List for Kerala Assembly Elections Targeting Christian Voters
BJP's Strategic Move in Kerala Assembly Elections
In a significant step towards the Kerala Assembly elections, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has announced its initial list of 47 candidates on Monday. A key highlight of this list is the party's strategic focus on appealing to Christian voters. The BJP has fielded four prominent Christian candidates in constituencies regarded as strongholds for Christians, aiming to challenge the long-standing dominance of the Left Democratic Front (LDF) and the United Democratic Front (UDF).
Meet BJP's Four Christian Candidates
The party has placed its bets on these candidates in crucial seats across Central Kerala:
George Kurian (Kanjirappally): The current Union Minister George Kurian will contest from the Kanjirappally seat in Kottayam district. His influence in this Christian-majority area could be a 'game-changer' for the BJP.
P.C. George (Poonjar): Veteran leader P.C. George, a seven-time MLA, will contest from his traditional seat in Poonjar. Having represented this region for 33 years, his experience is invaluable for the BJP.
Shone George (Pala): Young leader and son of P.C. George, Shone George has been nominated from the Pala constituency. As a district panchayat member and lawyer, he is viewed as a potential future face of the party.
Anup Antony Joseph (Thiruvalla): The BJP's state general secretary Anup Antony Joseph will contest from Thiruvalla in Pathanamthitta, an area known for its strong Christian presence.
Notable Leaders Joining the Fray
The BJP is not only relying on Christian candidates but has also brought in prominent national leaders for the electoral battle:
Rajeev Chandrasekhar: The former Union Minister will contest from the high-profile Nemom seat in Thiruvananthapuram.
V. Muraleedharan: The former Union Minister has been assigned the Kottakkal seat.
Other notable names include Shobha Surendran, K. Surendran, Padmaja Venugopal, and filmmaker Major Ravi. Additionally, the candidacy of former DGP R. Sreelekha has garnered attention.
Election Timeline
Chandrasekhar will contest from the Nemom constituency, while Muraleedharan will represent Kottakkal; both are significant constituencies in Thiruvananthapuram district. The BJP has also fielded former MLA K. Ajith from the Vaikom constituency, who recently joined the party after leaving the CPI. The Kerala Assembly elections are scheduled for April 9, with vote counting set for May 4.
