BJP Unveils Candidate List for Assam Elections with Focus on Youth and Indigenous Representation
BJP's Candidate List Released
Guwahati, Mar 19: Shortly after announcing the candidate list for the Assam elections, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma stated that the selection aims to ensure diverse representation of indigenous communities, prioritizing youth and grassroots activists.
“Our goal was to include all indigenous groups in the state. The enthusiasm among our workers regarding the candidates is palpable,” Sarma remarked, expressing his belief in the party's potential for a significant victory.
He emphasized that the candidate lineup features a considerable number of younger individuals. “We have indeed nominated several young candidates, as previously mentioned,” he noted, highlighting various constituencies where fresh faces have been introduced.
Sarma also pointed out the party's commitment to recognizing organizational workers. “We do not typically award tickets based on family lineage. Instead, we acknowledge those who have contributed at the grassroots level, including those working in party offices,” he explained.
Regarding women's representation, Sarma expressed hope for upcoming reforms, indicating that a statutory reservation for women is anticipated to be implemented in the near future. “By 2029, women will achieve 33% statutory representation, which will significantly alter India's political landscape,” he stated.
He also mentioned the inclusion of women candidates in the current list.
The Chief Minister revealed that the BJP has allocated 26 seats for its ally, Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), and discussions with coalition partners are ongoing. “I met with AGP leaders, and they informed me that they are preparing their list, which will be released soon. The same applies to the BPF and Rabha Hasong Jautho Sangram Samiti,” he shared during a press briefing at Vajpayee Bhawan in Guwahati.
When questioned about candidate selections, including the nomination of Pradyut Bordoloi, Sarma defended the choice, asserting it was made in the party's best interest. “His joining the BJP is not for personal benefit. He still has time left in his MP tenure. This decision was made collectively by the party,” he added, assuring that party workers would support all candidates.
Upcoming Campaign Events
Sarma outlined the immediate election strategy, indicating that many candidates are expected to submit their nominations in the next couple of days. “Dilip Saikia will distribute the AB forms. Most nominations will be filed on March 21 and 22. I will submit my nomination tomorrow from Jalukbari,” he stated.
Campaigning by the ruling coalition is set to commence on March 24, featuring senior leaders, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, and BJP national president Nitin Nabin, along with other prominent figures from both national and regional levels.
Sarma concluded by expressing confidence that voters would support the BJP-led alliance. “I trust that the people will bless us, enabling us to elevate Assam to new heights of development and progress,” he remarked.
