BJP Expels Leaders for Contesting Against Official Candidates
Guwahati, Mar 28: In a decisive disciplinary action prior to the Assam Assembly elections, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has expelled nine members for a duration of six years due to their decision to run against the party's officially endorsed candidates.
The individuals who have been expelled include Uddhav Das (Barpeta LAC), Jayanta Kumar Das (Dispur LAC), Jitendra Singh Gour (Kaliabor LAC), Amalendu Das (Barkhola LAC), Dhanjit Rabha (Goalpara West LAC), Chakradhar Das (Bongaigaon LAC), Gagan Chandra Haloi (Barpeta LAC), Ankur Das (Kamalpur LAC), and Yashoda Dulal (Shyamal) Rakshit (Lumding LAC).
In a communication dated March 27, Dilip Saikia, the State BJP president, indicated that this action aligns with the party's constitutional guidelines.
“For the upcoming 2026 Assam Assembly elections, the Bharatiya Janata Party has taken the step of expelling the following members for six years effective immediately for contesting against officially nominated candidates. This decision is made under Clause XXV-9 of the party constitution,” the letter elaborated.
The announcement was made by Anup Barman, the State General Secretary of BJP Assam Pradesh.
Moreover, six additional party members have been stripped of their primary membership for providing support to candidates opposing BJP nominees, as directed by the State leadership.
This disciplinary measure comes at a pivotal time, with the Assam Assembly elections set for April 9 and the vote counting scheduled for May 4, as political parties ramp up their campaigning efforts throughout the State.
