Guwahati, Nov 3: The Assam chapter of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is actively enhancing its organizational footprint in areas with significant minority populations, while firmly adhering to its core principles, stated Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday.

During a press briefing on the second day of the party's core committee meeting at Vajpayee Bhawan, Sarma urged party members to avoid compromising the BJP's ideological stance in a bid to win over minority voters.

“It is crucial to understand that bolstering our organizational base should not come at the expense of our ideology. Such compromises could lead to challenges for us,” he remarked.

He credited the party's increasing support in minority-heavy constituencies to the developmental projects initiated by his administration.

“Our organizational backing in these areas has grown, reflecting the development efforts made by our government,” he noted.

To illustrate his point, the Chief Minister referenced the Mankachar and Porbatjora Assembly seats, which the BJP narrowly lost in the previous elections.

He also highlighted the Nagaon Lok Sabha bypoll, mentioning the close races in Lahorighat and Samaguri.

The core committee meeting also assessed the party's readiness for upcoming elections to autonomous councils and municipal bodies throughout Assam.

Sarma indicated that the state BJP has opted for neutrality in the upcoming elections for the Mising Autonomous Council and Sonowal-Kachari Autonomous Council, as these elections will not utilize party symbols.

“Given that these elections will not be conducted under party symbols, the state BJP will maintain a neutral stance. This was one of the resolutions made,” he explained.

However, the party's immediate focus is on the municipal elections anticipated in March, which will be contested under party symbols, according to the Chief Minister.

“The municipal elections set for March will be held under party symbols. We have also reviewed the outcomes of the Nagaon bypolls and discussed the Silchar Municipal Corporation elections. Training sessions for newly inducted MLAs are planned, with our primary emphasis on the municipal elections,” he stated.

In a core committee meeting held on Monday, state BJP officials evaluated preparations for elections to the Tiwa Autonomous Council and Moran-Matak Autonomous Council, in addition to municipal boards across the state.

With numerous local body elections on the horizon, the party is concentrating on fortifying its organizational network and coordinating preparations across various regions of Assam.
