BJP's Remarkable Win in Assam
The National Democratic Alliance (NDA), led by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), has achieved a remarkable victory in the Assam Assembly elections, winning 102 out of 126 seats, thereby securing a two-thirds majority. This victory positions the NDA to form the government in the state for the third consecutive term. Notably, the BJP has achieved a majority on its own for the first time in Assam. Amid the celebrations, a handwritten prediction by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has gone viral on social media.
The BJP claimed victory in 82 seats, while its allied parties also performed impressively. The Bodoland People's Front (BPF) contested 11 seats and won 10, and the Assam Gana Parishad (AGP) contested 26 seats, securing 10. Following the results, a month-old note written by Himanta Biswa Sarma gained significant attention online. The Chief Minister shared that he had documented his predictions about the election results immediately after the voting concluded on April 9.
On X, he stated that after the polls closed in Assam on April 9, he recorded his thoughts on the potential outcomes of #AssamElectionResults2026 on paper, as he usually does. A month later, he expressed gratitude for achieving a better result than expected, thanks to the historic blessings of the public. His shared note outlined his expectations, categorizing 101 seats as the best-case scenario, over 90 as better, and over 88 as the worst. The final results closely aligned with his most optimistic predictions, sparking discussions about the accuracy of his assessments.
It is noteworthy that the opposition faced a significant setback in the state. The Congress party managed to secure only 19 seats. The All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF), led by Badruddin Ajmal, and the Raijor Dal, led by Akhil Gogoi, each won two seats. The Trinamool Congress managed to secure just one seat. Congress state president Gaurav Gogoi also faced defeat, losing to BJP's Hiten Nath Goswami from the Jorhat constituency by a margin of 23,181 votes. Gogoi, a three-time MP, had previously won the Jorhat seat in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections but was unable to replicate that success this time.
