BJP Plans to Contest Nagaon Lok Sabha Seat Amid Growing Voter Enthusiasm

Guwahati, Sept 11: Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced that the BJP is preparing to contest the Nagaon Lok Sabha seat in Assam, noting a surge in voter enthusiasm in recent times.
While discussing the party's electoral prospects, Sarma recognized that Nagaon has not been a traditional stronghold for the BJP, as evidenced by their loss in the previous Lok Sabha elections.
Despite this, he expressed optimism based on the positive feedback from the electorate, indicating that the party is considering a candidacy in the constituency.
“Nagaon has not been a typical BJP seat, and we did not win it last time. However, we have observed increasing interest from the voters recently. We will monitor how things unfold,” Sarma stated.
He referenced the BJP's success in Samaguri as a sign that the party could penetrate areas previously deemed outside its reach.
“We secured Samaguri last time, which was not considered a usual seat for us. Hence, we are also aiming to contest in Nagaon,” the Chief Minister remarked.
Sarma emphasized that the BJP's overarching goal is to maintain its current Assembly seats while expanding its influence across the state.
“Our primary focus will be to hold onto the Assembly seats we have and, where feasible, to gain additional seats,” he added.
He also introduced Devasish Sharma as the BJP candidate for the Nagaon Lok Sabha seat, highlighting Sharma's contributions, particularly his support for cancer patients in Assam, which bolstered his candidacy.
Sarma noted Sharma's assistance to cancer patients, including those who traveled to Mumbai for treatment during the COVID-19 pandemic, stating that the party had evaluated his effectiveness and dedication before selecting him.
“Devasish Sharma has made significant contributions to cancer patients. During the pandemic, he aided patients from Assam traveling to Mumbai for care. We recognize his efficiency, capability, and commitment, which led us to choose him for Nagaon,” Sarma explained.
In a critical assessment of the Congress party, Sarma claimed that it has lost its organizational strength in Assam and would find it challenging to regain power in the state.
“The Congress party no longer exists in Assam as it once did. Following the Assembly election results, they will not be able to return to power for the next two decades. Many of their members are joining the BJP out of frustration,” he asserted.
He further predicted that the Congress would remain limited to its current seats without a significant resurgence.
“I do not foresee a dramatic revival for the Congress. They will likely remain confined to the seats they currently occupy. The Congress has the general but lacks the army,” Sarma stated.
Additionally, the Chief Minister announced various programs to celebrate Prime Minister Narendra Modi's 25 years as an elected representative, which will be marked on October 7, commemorating his tenure as Gujarat Chief Minister starting in 2001.
Sarma described this milestone as a point of pride for BJP members, declaring that the period from September 17 to October 17 would be observed as a month dedicated to “service and resolve.”
“On October 7, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will complete 25 years of his journey as Gujarat Chief Minister and subsequently as Prime Minister of India. This journey is an exemplary and proud moment for every BJP worker,” Sarma concluded.
