BJP Optimistic About Nagaon Bypoll Despite Challenges

Guwahati, Sept 29: Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma expressed confidence in the BJP's chances in the Nagaon Assembly constituency, despite it being a challenging seat for the party. During a campaign meeting in Raidongia, he noted that grassroots mobilization and positive voter feedback have positioned the party favorably.

Sarma continued his campaign in Morigaon, addressing a gathering at Gandhi Field and planning to attend another event later. He acknowledged the difficulties in claiming victory but emphasized the hard work of party workers and the encouraging response from the electorate.

The Chief Minister highlighted the BJP's support from minority voters, referencing the party's performance in Lahorighat during the 2024 elections. He stated, “In 2024, we secured 47,000 votes in Lahorighat, and this time, we expect those numbers to double or triple.”

Linking his campaign to development, Sarma underscored the spiritual importance of Batadrava and expressed his commitment to supporting the development initiatives of current MLA Rupak Sarma. “Rupak Sarma has ambitious plans for Nagaon, and I am here to back his vision. The Rs 1.5 lakh crore earmarked for Assam's development will also benefit Nagaon,” he added.

However, Sarma's address was not solely focused on development. He also responded to Congress leader Rakibul Hussain, who had criticized him over alleged comments regarding “Miya” votes and religious institutions. Sarma pointed out the backlash Hussain faced in his former stronghold of Samaguri, suggesting that Hussain should reflect on his actions.

“I witnessed the public's discontent towards Rakibul Hussain in Samaguri, where protests erupted against him. Before he attacks me, he should consider what he has done wrong,” Sarma remarked.

He questioned the political implications of the protests against Hussain, noting that despite his family's political legacy in the constituency, the local response was overwhelmingly negative. “What does it signify when Hussain's father was a minister and his son is the current MLA, yet he faces such hostility?” Sarma asked.

While acknowledging that political rivalry is part of the electoral process, he urged Hussain to introspect on the reasons behind the protests. “In politics, exchanging criticisms is common, but Hussain must reflect, or the people of Samaguri may turn against him even more,” Sarma warned.

Hussain had previously criticized Sarma for his remarks about “Miya” votes and the alleged destruction of mosques and madrassas, stating, “I am not targeting the Chief Minister personally, but I am against the man who has made such statements.” He vowed to continue protesting against such comments.

The Nagaon bypoll has become a competitive three-way race, featuring BJP candidate Devashish Sharma, Congress candidate Shibamoni Bora, and AIUDF leader Maulana Badruddin Ajmal. Voting is set for October 6, with results to be announced on October 9.
