Controversial Statements Spark Outrage

On Saturday, Bharatiya Janata Party MP Ram Chander Jangra stirred controversy by suggesting that the women whose husbands died in the recent terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, lacked the 'spirit of warriors', according to reports.

This statement prompted significant backlash from opposition leaders, who are now calling for his expulsion from the BJP.

While speaking at an event in Bhiwani, Haryana, the Rajya Sabha MP remarked that the widows should have exhibited the qualities of 'veerangna', or warrior women. He further asserted that the number of casualties could have been reduced if the tourists had fought back against the attackers.

The tragic incident at Baisaran, near Pahalgam, on April 22 resulted in the deaths of 26 individuals and left 17 others injured. Authorities indicated that the terrorists specifically targeted tourists based on their religious identities, with nearly all victims being Hindu.

Opposition figures quickly condemned Jangra's comments regarding the attack.

Congress MP Jairam Ramesh labeled the remarks as 'shameful' and demanded an apology from Prime Minister Narendra Modi for what he termed a disgraceful statement.

Ramesh criticized BJP leaders for their continuous disrespect towards the Indian Army and martyrs, suggesting that such behavior reveals a petty mindset. He questioned why the silence from Prime Minister Modi and BJP leadership should not be interpreted as tacit approval of these remarks.

He also called for Jangra's removal from the party.

He expressed that even the term 'condemnable' would hesitate to be linked with Jangra's offensive comments about the grieving women of Pahalgam. Yadav emphasized that the BJP's true nature is one of disrespecting and exploiting women.

In response to the backlash, Jangra claimed that his words had been misinterpreted and expressed willingness to apologize if anyone was offended. He explained that his comments were made in the context of historical education, noting that prior to 2014, history books primarily focused on British and Mughal narratives. He argued that the inclusion of India's 'great warriors' in educational materials has inspired bravery among the youth.
