BJP MLA Raises Concerns Over Name Change of Lansdowne Cantonment Board
Objections to Name Change
Dilip Rawat, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) legislator representing the Lansdowne assembly constituency, has formally expressed his objections regarding the ongoing process to rename the Lansdowne Cantonment Board in Pauri Garhwal district. In a letter addressed to the Union Defence Minister, Rajnath Singh, the MLA articulated his concerns, emphasizing that Lansdowne is a thriving tourist destination attracting visitors from around the globe. He argued that altering the name of this 'tourist town' could negatively impact the region's burgeoning tourism industry.
Local Sentiment Against the Proposal
Rawat stated that local residents are entirely opposed to this proposal, insisting that the identity and name of Lansdowne should remain unchanged. He warned that tampering with the city's established identity could diminish its international appeal, potentially harming the local economy. The BJP MLA remarked, "Lansdowne is rapidly advancing as a tourist area. Changing the name of this city would severely damage the flourishing tourism sector." Lansdowne Cantonment is situated in the heart of Pauri Garhwal district in Uttarakhand.
Historical Background of Lansdowne
In 1886, a decision was made to form a separate regiment of Garhwalis based on a recommendation from Field Marshal Sir F.S. Roberts, the Commander-in-Chief of India. The area, previously a dense forest known as 'Kalundanda,' is located at an elevation of approximately 6000 feet. It was approved as a suitable location for a cantonment and regiment by Brigadier General J.I. Murray, the GOC of the Rohilkhand district. The region was predominantly covered with oak and rhododendron trees, which appeared darker, especially when viewed from a distance during the often foggy weather, leading to its name 'Kalundanda.' On September 21, 1890, Kalundanda was renamed 'Lansdowne' in honor of Lord Henry Lansdowne, the then Viceroy of India.
Cantonment Board's Responsibilities
According to the official website of Lansdowne Cantonment, the primary objective of the Cantonment Board is to provide civic amenities to the residents. These amenities include sanitation, water supply, medical facilities, education, street lighting, public toilets, and cleanliness. Additionally, the board is responsible for maintaining the cantonment's funds and properties, such as public roads, buildings, and parks. It operates under the provisions of the Cantonment Act of 2006.
Inspection of Kedarnath Yatra Arrangements
Meanwhile, Vishal Mishra, the District Magistrate of Rudraprayag, conducted a detailed inspection of the arrangements related to the ongoing 'Kedarnath Dham Yatra.' During this inspection, he particularly focused on helicopter services, safety standards, and the overall infrastructure available for pilgrims.
