BJP's Call for Unity in Assam

Guwahati, Dec 28: Union Shipping Minister Sarbananda Sonowal has emphasized the importance of unity among BJP members as the party prepares for the upcoming 2026 assembly elections in Assam.

During a state executive meeting, Sonowal expressed confidence in the party's ability to secure a third consecutive term, attributing this to the achievements of the "double-engine" government over the past decade.

"As we approach the 2026 elections, we are in a strong position, but it is crucial for everyone to maintain discipline and avoid internal conflicts. The public supports us, but we must not let infighting undermine our efforts," he stated.

Sonowal highlighted that the BJP's journey in Assam represents a significant shift from the "years of neglect and instability" experienced under previous Congress administrations.

"For almost 60 years, the people of Assam and the Northeast faced a lack of peace, development, and dignity. It was only under PM Narendra Modi's leadership that we began to see progress and healing of the emotional wounds caused by decades of mismanagement by Congress," he asserted.

He noted that peace and stability returned to the region after the BJP took power in 2016, thanks to dialogue, decisive measures, and the signing of various peace agreements.

According to Sonowal, the Prime Minister's regular visits and the presence of Union ministers have shifted governance from a "Lutyens Delhi-centric elite" model to one that is more accessible to the people.

He reminded party members that "the nation comes first, the party second, and self last."

Earlier in the meeting, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma urged party members to prepare diligently for the upcoming elections, stressing the necessity for the BJP to win in order to safeguard the identity of Assam and its people.

“This is our final executive meeting before the elections and the first Assembly polls following delimitation. This time, every Assamese and Sanatani will support us. The people of Assam now trust only the BJP,” Sarma declared.

He also pointed out that the delimitation process has provided essential protections for indigenous communities.

“Our primary focus is development. We have launched several ambitious initiatives, including a semiconductor project and a new unit at the Namrup fertilizer plant. Prime Minister Modi is deeply invested in the development of Assam and the Northeast,” he added.
