Legacy of Mahatma Jyotirao Phule

Mahatma Jyotirao Phule, born on April 11, 1827, in Satara, Maharashtra, was a prominent Indian social reformer, activist, and writer. He is celebrated for his efforts to abolish the caste system, promote women's education, and empower marginalized communities. Along with his followers, he founded the Satyashodhak Samaj to advocate for equal rights for farmers and lower-caste individuals.

Nitin Nabin's Remarks

Speaking to the media, Nitin Nabin remarked that the nation continues to remember Phule for his contributions to social reform. From establishing the first girls' school to his role in abolishing the practice of Sati, Phule's legacy remains relevant today. He highlighted that initiatives like the 'Beti Bachao Beti Padhao' campaign, aimed at empowering women and ensuring their representation through the Nari Vandan Act, reflect Prime Minister Modi's commitment to these ideals. The proposed 33% reservation for women is in line with Jyotirao Phule's vision.

Government's Proposal for Women's Reservation

The central government is planning to amend the number of Lok Sabha seats from 543 to 816, with a proposal to reserve at least 273 seats for women. Currently, there are 543 seats in the Lok Sabha; with the proposed 50% increase, the total will rise to 816, of which approximately one-third will be reserved for women. The Union Cabinet has already approved the draft bill for the Nari Shakti Vandan Act, 2023, facilitating its implementation in the 2029 Lok Sabha elections. This proposed amendment ensures 33% reservation for women in both Parliament and state assemblies.
