On Thursday, Aashray Sharma, a BJP leader and former Lok Sabha candidate from Mandi, publicly accused Champa Thakur, the Congress District President, of engaging in electoral misconduct and misusing her political influence during the ongoing Zila Parishad elections in Mandi district.

During a press conference, Sharma claimed that Thakur, who is running for the Zila Parishad election for the fifth time, attempted to politically undermine a female candidate competing against her. He mentioned that a complaint had previously been lodged with the SDM to annul the rival candidate's nomination.

Sharma further alleged that when the attempt to cancel the nomination failed, there were efforts to convince the candidate to withdraw from the election through financial incentives. He also claimed that promises of a government job were made to encourage her withdrawal from the race.

Describing these actions as a significant misuse of political power, Sharma emphasized the need for grassroots democratic institutions to operate free from coercion and inducement.

Additionally, Sharma accused Thakur's husband, a government doctor, of being overly involved in Congress activities and election campaigning, suggesting that he prioritizes political engagement over his official duties. He noted that similar behavior was observed during the Municipal Corporation elections.

In another development, Sharma filed a formal complaint with the Deputy Commissioner of Mandi, requesting an investigation into alleged duplicate voter registrations associated with Champa Thakur.

The complaint asserts that there are two separate voter registrations under Thakur's name in Mandi district. One is reportedly registered in Dwahan under Mandi Sadar with EPIC number BLK0592386, while another is said to exist in Palace Colony-II under Nagar Nigam Mandi with EPIC number RMC0055467.

Sharma warned that if these allegations are confirmed, they would constitute a breach of electoral regulations and raise concerns about the verification processes employed by the authorities responsible for maintaining electoral rolls.

He called on the district administration to carry out a thorough and unbiased investigation and to take appropriate legal measures if any irregularities are discovered.

As of the time of this report, there has been no response from Champa Thakur or the Congress party regarding these allegations.
