Jorhat, Oct 14: A significant number of BJP leaders and supporters gathered in Jorhat on Wednesday for a mass awareness rally, expressing their support for Prime Minister Narendra Modi's leadership and the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.

The event, named “Jana Jagaran Samadal,” was spearheaded by Cabinet Ministers Pijush Hazarika and Sushanta Borgohain, along with Rameswar Teli. The rally traversed various parts of the city, resulting in a substantial turnout that caused disruptions to traffic and daily activities in some locations.

This rally was organized in response to protests by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), Congress, and the INDIA bloc in Delhi, which the BJP accused of undermining national interests and hindering progress.

Participants voiced their demand for an SIR to identify and eliminate names of suspected foreign nationals and duplicate entries from the electoral rolls.

During the rally, Hazarika claimed that there are efforts to grant citizenship and voting rights to foreigners, cautioning that such actions could jeopardize the nation. He stated, “We will not permit this. Certain groups are protesting in Delhi and attempting to tarnish India’s judicial system, but we will resist these actions. The people of Assam and India support Prime Minister Narendra Modi. We require SIR, and foreigners must be excluded from Assam’s electoral rolls.”

Borgohain echoed these sentiments, accusing Congress and other entities of acting against the nation's interests and emphasizing the importance of maintaining accurate electoral rolls.

“We are united in this cause, and BJP leaders, workers, and members are committed to this effort. We need SIR to ensure that the electoral rolls are precise and reflect the true situation,” he remarked.

Jorhat MLA Hitendra Nath Goswami defended the BJP's stance on national development and criticized the protests regarding the Election Commission's operations.

“PM Modi is elevating India on the global stage, and we have witnessed world leaders visiting our country. India is becoming a global power. As a democracy, we conduct elections every five years, yet there are already questions and protests before this term concludes,” Goswami stated.

The Jorhat rally followed a similar event in Nalbari on Tuesday, where thousands participated in a BJP-organized procession against what the party labeled as anti-national forces.

In response to the Nalbari rally, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma characterized the turnout as a warning to those allegedly attempting to destabilize the nation.

“This isn't merely a crowd; it's a warning. The youth of India will not remain silent while Congress and Dimagi Naxals pursue their regime-change agenda,” Sarma expressed on a microblogging platform.

On October 12, Sarma announced peaceful marches in support of democracy at district headquarters throughout Assam, commencing on October 13.

The BJP stated that these rallies aim to counter what they describe as “undemocratic” forces attempting to instigate regime change in the country.
