BJP Gains Early Advantage in Silchar Municipal Corporation Elections

In a significant development ahead of the Silchar Municipal Corporation elections, the BJP has secured two seats unopposed after Congress candidates withdrew their nominations. This early advantage positions the BJP favorably before the official polling, scheduled for October 3. The political landscape has shifted as several candidates, including some from the BJP, have also withdrawn, while others remain in the race, setting the stage for a competitive election. The counting of votes will take place on October 6, making this a crucial moment for local politics in Silchar.

BJP's Unopposed Wins in Silchar Elections

Silchar, Sept 18: In a notable turn of events leading up to the inaugural Silchar Municipal Corporation elections, the BJP has claimed two seats without opposition after candidates from Congress and other parties withdrew their nominations on Thursday.

In Ward 20, the Congress candidate Rupali Das stepped back from the race, allowing BJP's Bhakti Sen Talukdar to be elected unopposed. This victory marks her as one of the first councillors of the newly formed municipal corporation.

A similar scenario unfolded in Ward 9, where Congress candidate Amalendu Dey also withdrew. Initially, BJP's Bijendra Prasad Singh was expected to compete against SUCI's Apan Lal Das, but Das withdrew at the last minute, leading to Singh's unopposed election.

This situation has given the BJP a significant head start even before the official polling for this landmark civic election begins.

Additionally, the Congress faced another blow when its candidate for Ward 12, Mousumi Das, withdrew her nomination. However, this seat will still see competition as an Independent candidate remains in the race.

Several Independent candidates, including some former BJP members who had filed nominations after being denied tickets, also withdrew on the final day. Nevertheless, BJP dissidents Rathindra Saha, Saheli Deb, and Sanghita Chakraborty continue to contest from their respective wards, presenting challenges for the party. Notably, Rathindra Saha, known as Madhab Saha, has even put up a poster outside his home restricting BJP leaders' entry.

The withdrawals have shifted the political dynamics in various wards as Silchar gears up for its first election since becoming a municipal corporation, with voting set for October 3 and counting on October 6.
