BJP Dominates Political Donations in FY 2024-25, Report Reveals

A recent report highlights the BJP's overwhelming financial advantage in political donations for the fiscal year 2024-25, revealing that it received ten times more than all other national parties combined. The report shows a significant increase in donations across the board, with corporate contributions dominating the landscape. The Aam Aadmi Party and other parties also saw notable increases, but none came close to the BJP's total. This financial analysis sheds light on the evolving dynamics of political funding in India.
 

BJP's Financial Gains Outshine Competitors


A recent report from the Association of Democratic Reforms indicates that the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) secured donations that were tenfold greater than the total contributions received by all other national parties during the financial year 2024-25.


The BJP amassed over Rs 6,074 crore through 5,522 donations, while the Congress party followed with Rs 517.3 crore from 2,501 donations.


The analysis focused on contributions exceeding Rs 20,000 made to national parties in the specified financial year.


According to the report published on Thursday, there was a remarkable 161% increase in donations to national parties compared to the previous year, amounting to an additional Rs 4,104.2 crore.


Combined, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), the Communist Party of India (Marxist), and the National People’s Party received over Rs 6,648 crore from 11,343 donations.


Notably, the Bahujan Samaj Party reported no donations above Rs 20,000 for the 19th consecutive year.


The AAP reported Rs 38.1 crore in donations, reflecting a 244% increase from the last fiscal year. The CPI(M) received Rs 16.9 crore, marking a 122% rise, while the National People’s Party reported Rs 2 crore, a staggering 1,313% increase compared to the previous year.


While the BJP's donations surged by 171%, the Congress saw an 84% increase in its contributions.


Corporate donations dominated the funding landscape, contributing Rs 6,128.7 crore, which represents 92.18% of the total donations. Individual contributions accounted for Rs 505.6 crore, or 7.61% of the total.


The Prudent Electoral Trust emerged as the leading donor, contributing a total of Rs 2,413.4 crore to the BJP, Congress, and AAP combined.


Of this, the trust allocated Rs 2,180.7 crore to the BJP, which constitutes 35.9% of the party's total funds. The Congress received Rs 216.3 crore, representing 41.8% of its total, while AAP obtained Rs 16.4 crore, or 43.08% of its total funding.
