BJP Delays Odisha Unit Elections Following Tragic Stampede During Rath Yatra

In a somber turn of events, the BJP has halted its election process for the Odisha unit chief after a stampede during the Rath Yatra festivities in Puri led to the loss of three lives and injuries to over 50 others. Balasore MP Pratap Sarangi announced the postponement, expressing condolences to the victims' families. Originally scheduled for July 1, the elections will now be rescheduled, with further details to be shared later. The party has also appointed an observer for the elections, but all activities are currently on hold.
 

Election Postponed Amidst Tragedy


Bhubaneswar: The BJP has decided to suspend the election process for its Odisha unit chief, which was set to begin, due to a tragic stampede that occurred during the Rath Yatra celebrations in Puri, as reported by a party official.


The unfortunate incident resulted in the deaths of three individuals, including two women, and left over 50 others injured near the Shree Gundicha Temple early on Sunday.


Pratap Chandra Sarangi, the Balasore MP and appointed state returning officer for the party's organizational elections, announced that the elections for both the state president and national council members from Odisha have been "put on hold."


Sarangi expressed his sorrow over the loss of life, stating, "This tragic event has deeply affected us all. We extend our heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased devotees."


He further mentioned that the elections, originally scheduled for July 1, will be postponed until further notice, with updates to be provided later.


Earlier in the day, Sarangi had indicated that voting for the BJP's organizational elections and the announcement of the state unit president were planned for July 1.


Additionally, Sanjay Jaiswal, a Bihar MP, has been designated as the observer for the upcoming elections.


However, all activities are now on hold pending further announcements, Sarangi confirmed.
