BJP Criticizes Himachal Pradesh Government Over Lottery System

Rajeev Bindal, the BJP president in Himachal Pradesh, has launched a strong attack on the Congress government led by Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu. He accused the administration of misleading unemployed youth by reinstating the state-run lottery system instead of fulfilling their promise of providing jobs. Bindal emphasized that this move is not only exploitative but also a regression for the youth, pushing them towards gambling. He further criticized the government's decision to close numerous educational and health institutions, arguing that it hinders development in the state. This article delves into the implications of the lottery system and the broader concerns regarding employment in Himachal Pradesh.

BJP's Rajeev Bindal Targets Congress Government

In a sharp critique of the ruling Congress government in Himachal Pradesh, Rajeev Bindal, the state president of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), accused Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu's administration of misleading the public, particularly unemployed youth, by reinstating the state-run lottery system. During a press conference in Shimla, Bindal claimed that the cabinet's decision to revive the lottery system mocks the unemployed. He asserted that instead of creating job opportunities, the government is pushing youth towards gambling and false hopes.

Bindal stated, "The Sukhu government promised one lakh government jobs in its very first cabinet meeting. Now, three years later, they have introduced a lottery system, urging youth to buy tickets to change their fortunes. This is not governance; it is exploitation." He labeled the initiation of the lottery system as anti-people. Bindal questioned the government's rationale for reviving the lottery, which was banned by the BJP government led by Prem Kumar Dhumal in 2000, reintroduced by Congress in 2004, and then banned again in 2007. Now, in 2025, Congress has decided to bring it back.

He remarked that while the world progresses, the Himachal government is regressing its youth towards lottery counters. This policy, he argued, is merely a business under the guise of government gambling to generate revenue. Addressing allegations of closing schools and institutions, he criticized the state government for shutting down nearly 2,000 educational and health institutions, including schools, patwar mandals, sub-tehsils, and BDO offices, instead of fostering development in the state.
