BJP Confident of Historic Victory in Assam Assembly Elections
BJP's Optimism for Upcoming Elections
GUWAHATI, March 27: Dilip Saikia, the president of the state BJP, has expressed strong confidence that the NDA will secure a 'historic mandate' in the Assam Assembly elections scheduled for April 9. He attributes this optimism to what he describes as the remarkable achievements of the ruling government in Dispur over the past decade.
In a recent exclusive interview, Saikia predicted that the Congress party, the main opposition, would face a significant defeat in the upcoming elections.
“The key issues for the BJP in these elections will focus on Assam's development and the security of its citizens. We aim to build upon the progress made during the last ten years of NDA governance and elevate it further. Additionally, we are committed to ensuring the safety of Assam's culture, language, and heritage,” he stated.
Saikia emphasized that the state has made strides in various sectors under the BJP-led administration.
“Our government has delivered unprecedented results. No other administration in the post-Independence era has accomplished as much for Assam as we have. We have met the expectations of the public and fulfilled our promises,” he remarked.
When asked about the party's goals for the elections, Saikia mentioned, “The electorate will ultimately decide the number of seats. However, we are striving for a historic victory, aiming for a level of success never seen before in Assam's electoral history. We anticipate a significant increase in our vote share.”
He noted that voters will likely compare the conditions of Assam before and after 2016, highlighting a stark contrast.
Saikia also confirmed that the NDA has successfully arranged a seat-sharing agreement for the elections.
“The NDA's votes are fully transferable among its members. All partners, including BJP, AGP, BPF, TMPK, Ganashakti, and the Rabha Hasong Joutha Sangram Samiti, will campaign together across the state. We have established steering and election management committees at the local level to ensure coordination among party workers,” he added.
Saikia accused the Congress party of neglecting the indigenous communities in Assam.
“During its 55 years of governance, the Congress party failed to deliver and instead contributed to the marginalization of indigenous people. Their rule led to stagnation and a decline in law and order, making Assam one of the poorest states in India. The Congress will face the consequences of its actions in the upcoming elections,” he asserted.
He mentioned that the AIUDF has managed to regain some of its previous support after a poor performance in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.
“There will be a contest between Congress and AIUDF in Muslim-majority areas, but it remains uncertain which party will secure more seats,” Saikia noted.
As part of the seat-sharing strategy for the 2026 Assembly elections, the BJP has nominated candidates in 90 constituencies, while the AGP will contest in 26 and the BPF in 11. In Sibsagar LAC, the BJP and AGP are in a 'friendly contest'. In the previous Assembly elections, the NDA secured 75 seats, with the BJP winning 60, AGP nine, and UPPL six.
