BJP Responds to Congress's Claims

New Delhi: On Saturday, the BJP asserted that the recent statement from the Election Commission has unveiled the 'falsehoods' and 'malicious propaganda' propagated by the Congress party and Rahul Gandhi concerning the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.

BJP leader Ravi Shankar Prasad criticized Rahul Gandhi, labeling him as a 'non-serious politician' who has been spreading misinformation.

The Election Commission clarified that all directives regarding the SIR were sanctioned by all three election commissioners, and the modifications in Form 6, which facilitates the inclusion of names in the voter list, have received validation from the Supreme Court.

In light of the ongoing disputes between two election commissioners and Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, the EC stated that the correspondence from commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi to the Cabinet Secretary did not pertain to any policy matters of the Commission or its IT division, but rather addressed the performance of an officer on temporary assignment to the Commission.

The EC further explained that the work redistribution orders from the concerned officer were not executed following the directives from the two commissioners, and the oversight of the IT division by the Deputy Election Commissioner (DEC) was never actually revoked.

Prasad remarked that the opposition, particularly Rahul Gandhi, was making unfounded and disgraceful accusations based on a media report that was factually incorrect.

He emphasized that the EC's statement has effectively discredited the Congress party and Rahul Gandhi.

Additionally, Prasad urged other opposition parties to focus on their electoral strategies rather than making baseless claims against the electoral authority.

The controversy arose after a report from The Indian Express highlighted ongoing concerns raised by Sandhu and Joshi regarding the SIR within the three-member Election Commission.

While the national implementation of the SIR has been overseen by all three commissioners, Sandhu and Joshi have formally objected at least 14 times over the past ten months to decisions made and orders issued without their awareness.
