BJP Accuses TMC of Misusing Voter List Revision in West Bengal

In a heated political climate, BJP leader Dilip Ghosh has accused the TMC of opposing and misusing the Special Intensive Revision of voter lists in West Bengal. He warns that neglecting this process could lead to a significant number of fraudulent voters remaining unchecked. Meanwhile, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has countered these claims, alleging that the SIR process has resulted in fatalities and is being used to destabilize her government. As tensions rise ahead of the 2026 assembly elections, both parties are engaged in a war of words over the implications of the voter list revision.

BJP Leader's Allegations Against TMC

On Friday, Dilip Ghosh, a leader from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), accused the Trinamool Congress (TMC) of opposing and misusing the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter lists in West Bengal. He warned that neglecting this process could allow 10% of fraudulent voters to remain unchecked, undermining the entire SIR initiative. Speaking to a news outlet, Ghosh stated that not only has the TMC opposed the SIR in West Bengal, but they have also exploited the process. He emphasized the need for thorough verification, stating that otherwise, the presence of 10% fake voters would render the SIR process ineffective.

Political Tensions Surrounding the SIR Process

West Bengal is currently conducting the SIR process alongside 11 other states and Union Territories, with assembly elections anticipated in 2026. Meanwhile, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee launched a sharp critique against the BJP on Thursday, alleging that the SIR exercise, initiated just months before the elections, has resulted in the deaths of 40 individuals and is being used to destabilize the state government.

In her announcement, Banerjee declared a compensation of ₹2 lakh for the families of the deceased and ₹1 lakh for those hospitalized. She accused the central government of selectively implementing the SIR in non-BJP ruled states like West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, and Kerala. Banerjee claimed that the SIR has led to these fatalities and questioned the timing of its announcement, suggesting it was designed to hinder the state government just three months before elections.

Call for Participation and Allegations Against BJP

Urging citizens to participate in hearings and fill out forms correctly, Chief Minister Banerjee accused the BJP of attempting to marginalize minorities, including the Matua and Rajbanshi communities. She warned voters against supporting independent candidates, claiming it would indirectly benefit the BJP. Banerjee asserted that under the guise of the SIR, the BJP is trying to establish a detention camp in Bengal, firmly stating that no such camp will be created. She urged the BJP to heed her warning and participate in the hearings, or risk having their names removed from the voter list.
