This escalating political tension raises significant concerns about the fairness of the upcoming elections.

BJP Raises Concerns Over Election Fairness

On Tuesday, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) sent a letter to the Chief Election Commissioner of West Bengal, accusing Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee of delivering incendiary speeches that threaten the integrity of the electoral process. The party highlighted specific instances of voter intimidation, citing a public rally in North Bengal's Mainaguri on March 25, 2026, where Banerjee allegedly stated that after the elections, citizens would be compelled to display posters outside their homes stating, 'I do not support BJP.'

The letter addressed to the Chief Election Commissioner expressed, "Sir, we wish to draw your attention to the extremely concerning public statements and events that indicate a planned campaign of provocation, intimidation, and incitement to violence. These statements pose a serious threat to the fairness of the ongoing electoral process and repeatedly violate the Model Code of Conduct, electoral laws, and criminal statutes. The recent alarming public statements made by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee during various public rallies across the state reflect a disturbing pattern aimed at instilling fear and intimidation among voters, jeopardizing the prospects for free, fair, and peaceful elections."

Specific Allegations of Intimidation

The letter further elaborated on the allegations, stating, "We are providing some examples: during a public rally in Mainaguri on March 25, 2026, the Chief Minister allegedly claimed that after the elections, the public would be forced to put up posters outside their homes that read, 'I do not support BJP.' Such comments pose a direct threat to the freedom of political expression and the autonomy of voters."

Mamata Banerjee Responds to Allegations

In a parallel development, on the same day, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who also leads the Trinamool Congress (TMC), wrote to the Chief Election Commissioner alleging a conspiracy to undermine democratic rights in the state ahead of the 2026 assembly elections. She expressed her deep concern over a serious plot against the democratic rights of the people of Bengal in a post on X. Banerjee claimed that BJP agents were caught red-handed attempting to include non-residents and outsiders in Bengal's voter list by sending thousands of fraudulent Form 6 applications to the office of the Chief Electoral Officer. She described this as an attempt at voter hijacking, similar to the dirty tactics the BJP successfully employed in Maharashtra and Delhi.
