Allegations of Corruption in Karnataka's Waste Management

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has leveled serious accusations against the Congress-led government in Karnataka, claiming involvement in a significant waste management scam worth ₹39,000 crores. The party alleges that this was executed through irregularities in the tender process and a substantial increase in project costs.

This statement follows remarks made by R. Ashok, the leader of the opposition in the Karnataka Assembly, who accused the Congress government of orchestrating a 'scam' in Bengaluru's waste management sector. He alleged that the government accepted a bribe of ₹10,000 crores in exchange for awarding a long-term contract for waste processing to a private firm.

Ashok has lodged a complaint with Governor Thawar Chand Gehlot, requesting an investigation into the tender process. He asserted that the contract was awarded to a single company at exorbitant rates for a duration of 35 years, placing a significant financial burden on the state treasury.

BJP national spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla claimed in a post on 'X' that this alleged scam is the latest in a series of corruption cases linked to the Congress government. He stated, 'After the Muda scam, contractor scam, housing scam, liquor scam, and land scam, Karnataka is now facing a ₹39,000 crore waste management scandal.'

Poonawalla further noted that the waste disposal fee has skyrocketed from approximately ₹260 per ton to ₹2,400 per ton, marking an increase of nearly 950%. He argued that while the old system incurred costs of around ₹6,117 crores over 30 years, the new contract will exceed ₹39,000 crores.

The BJP spokesperson claimed that the tender process was 'pre-determined' and that an informal agreement had been established to benefit certain companies before bids were solicited.

Echoing similar sentiments, BJP national spokesperson Pradeep Bhandari remarked on 'X', stating, 'Congress means looting, and looting means Congress.' He added, 'Bengaluru is drowning in garbage, and Congress is profiting from it while the Chief Minister is busy suppressing dissent within the party.'

As of now, the Karnataka government has not responded to these allegations.
