BJP's Strategic Move for Upcoming Elections

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has instructed its units in Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Uttarakhand, and Goa to ramp up preparations for the upcoming elections. Sources indicate that this decision is driven by indications that assembly elections in these states may occur earlier than expected, avoiding a clash with the census process scheduled for February 2027. Additionally, the BJP is closely monitoring the situation in Manipur, which is the fifth state where elections are anticipated early next year alongside others.

However, sporadic incidents of violence in the state—stemming from the earlier 2023 Kuki-Meitei conflict and the recent escalation of the Kuki-Naga struggle—may lead to a postponement of elections. Discussions are ongoing regarding the possibility of conducting elections a few weeks or months earlier than planned, as the census and voting processes will require the involvement of various personnel, including teachers and government employees.

A senior BJP official mentioned that concerns over staff shortages have prompted discussions about altering the election schedule in the states involved. The second phase of the census, which includes counting the population and caste, is set to commence in February 2027. Reports suggest that core groups in all election-bound states have been urged to expedite their electoral preparations. In Uttar Pradesh, Goa, and Punjab, BJP sources have indicated that elections might be held a few weeks earlier to avoid logistical challenges associated with the census, as both processes require similar personnel. Meanwhile, the Uttarakhand BJP is reportedly in favor of conducting elections even sooner.
