BJ Watling Appointed as New Zealand's Batting Coach Following ICC World Test Championship
Watling Takes Over Coaching Role
Former New Zealand wicketkeeper-batter BJ Watling is poised to succeed Luke Ronchi as the batting coach for the Black Caps. This transition will occur after the ICC World Test Championship series against India, scheduled for early December, according to the ICC.
Watling is set to join the coaching staff on November 16, where he will initially collaborate with Ronchi during a handover period. He will officially assume the role when New Zealand embarks on a four-match Test series in Australia.
A Look at Watling's Career Achievements
Watling boasts an impressive international cricket background, having amassed 3,790 runs in 75 Test matches, which includes eight centuries and 19 half-centuries. Notably, he scored nearly 3,400 of these runs while serving as a wicketkeeper, a record for New Zealand. His 265 dismissals behind the stumps also set a national benchmark, surpassing Adam Parore's previous record of 201. Watling concluded his international career in 2021, contributing to the Black Caps' victory in the inaugural World Test Championship against India.
Watling Expresses Enthusiasm for New Role
Watling expressed his excitement about rejoining the New Zealand team and collaborating with the current players. He commended the team's recent accomplishments and is eager to make a positive impact.
He stated, "I’m incredibly excited. To come back into the team and work with this current group is a special opportunity and one I don’t take lightly. What this side and the support staff have achieved together over recent years has been remarkable, so I’m looking forward to contributing to a world-class side."
Latham Commends Watling's Work Ethic
New Zealand Test captain Tom Latham praised Watling's dedication and work ethic, suggesting that his player mentality will influence his coaching approach.
Latham remarked, "BJ is a guy who personified what it means to be a BLACKCAP, so having someone like him come back into the group will be great for our environment. There was never any doubt about his effort and determination every time he stepped onto the field, and I’m sure that same attitude will translate in his coaching style."
