Bihar's Political Landscape Shifts as Nitish Kumar Prepares to Resign
Bihar's Political Transition
Bihar is entering a significant political phase as Chief Minister Nitish Kumar is set to resign following his final cabinet meeting on April 14. With only hours left until the meeting, all eyes are on the BJP's next steps and the selection of new leadership that will shape the state's future. Kumar has scheduled what is likely his last cabinet meeting for 11 AM on April 14, after which he is expected to submit his resignation to the governor. Preparations for the transfer of power are already underway, with an official press briefing being organized.
Leadership Changes and BJP's Opportunity
Kumar has also begun vacating his official residence at 7 Circular Road, indicating that his departure is imminent. The BJP, a key ally in the NDA coalition that has never held the chief minister's position in Bihar, now sees an opportunity. In the 2025 assembly elections, the BJP emerged as the largest party for the first time, winning 89 seats, while its ally JDU secured 85 seats. The NDA coalition achieved victories in 202 out of 243 seats, diminishing the strength of the RJD-Congress-led Grand Alliance.
Speculations Surrounding the Next Chief Minister
Despite the unfolding events, leaders remain tight-lipped. A senior BJP leader in Delhi requested not to speculate on who the next chief minister will be, stating only that the candidate will be from the BJP. The decision will be made at a higher level, and no guesses should be made at this stage, as clarity will emerge in a few days. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah will make the final call. JDU leaders are also refraining from speculation, with party executive president Sanjay Jha stating that everything will be clear after April 13.
Potential Candidates for Chief Minister
Three names have emerged as frontrunners for the BJP's nomination. Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Chaudhary is considered the strongest candidate for the position. As a prominent leader of the Kushwaha community, Bihar's second-largest backward caste, his elevation would strengthen the party's OBC dynamics. Currently, he holds the Home Ministry portfolio and is serving as Deputy Chief Minister for the second time.
